Best Video Editing Tutorial for Absolute Beginners (Step-by-Step)

Most beginner editing tutorials make the same mistake—they jump straight into software without setting you up for success. In this video, I flip that approach. With over 20 years of experience editing high-end TV commercials, I want to show you how to start editing with a pro mindset from day one.

Here’s how to actually begin your editing journey the right way:

  • Mindset First: Don’t aim for perfection. Your only goal with your first edit is to start it and finish it. That’s it.

  • Software Basics: I demo in Premiere Pro, but you can follow along with DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut—editing fundamentals apply across all platforms.

  • Get Footage: Don’t let lack of footage stop you. I share where to get free stock clips so you can start immediately.

Once you're set up, we move beyond the buttons and into the craft of editing with five essential principles:

  1. Emotion: What do you want your audience to feel? Start there.

  2. Story: Even a simple video needs a beginning, middle, and end. Map it out before you edit.

  3. Rhythm: Vary your shot lengths and create flow. This is where your edit starts to take shape.

  4. Sound: Music and effects aren’t just extras—they enhance emotion and storytelling.

  5. Action: Cut based on what’s happening in the frame. Every edit should serve a visual purpose.

These are the fundamentals I wish every beginner learned first. If you practice with these from day one, your edits will be stronger, more engaging, and way more fun to make.

Happy editing!
