Pro Editor Reveals How To 2X Your Editing Income

editing insights Jan 11, 2026

For years, I struggled to make consistent money as an editor. I loved the craft, but my income was stuck—until I fixed four specific mistakes. Those same fixes helped me hit over $1M from editing before 30, and I’ve seen them work for my students too, including editors booking their first five-figure projects.

In this video, I break down the exact four outreach mistakes that are keeping your editing work ignored—and how fixing them can realistically double your replies, your booked jobs, and your income.

The biggest breakthrough for me was realizing that editing isn’t about software—it’s about emotion and story. But skill alone wasn’t enough. I treated my portfolio like a billboard in the desert: technically there, but no one was seeing it. Everything changed once I learned how to get my work in front of the right people the right way.

Here are the four mistakes I see editors making every single day—and how to fix them:

  • Sending form or mass emails
Generic, copy-pasted outreach doesn’t work. You need to send personal, one-to-one emails to people you’ve actually found yourself. Start with their name. Keep it human.

  • Talking about yourself too early
If you open by pitching your services, you’ve already lost them. Instead, start by talking about their work—something specific you genuinely liked that relates directly to what you do.

  • Sending too many links
Don’t overwhelm people. One email, one link. That link should show only the most relevant work for their needs—not your entire portfolio.

  • Not asking for a clear action
Open-ended emails don’t get replies. Ask for something specific, like a quick chat—or even better, offer a free test edit to build trust fast.

If you go from 5 replies per 100 emails to 10, that alone can double your jobs (and your income) over time. Small changes. Huge results.
